Because the open source interconnection model standards offer more functions than simple network process, products compliant with these standards are more complex and, therefore, require more time to develop. While these protocols offer more capabilities, the trade-off is in memory requirements. Simple network protocol might need more memory; common management information protocol might require as much as 2.5Mbytes.
